Hello everyone! How are you all doing? I’m currently snuggled up on the sofa with a cup of tea and a book feeling ill and sorry for myself. I’ve not been blogging as much as usual because I’ve been reading a lot at the moment. I have a really busy month in June full of very exciting blog tours so I’m trying to get ahead of all the books! Today I have my review for Bloodlust & Bonnets by Emily McGovern, a really fun and exciting graphic novel that I adored!
Goodreads Synopsis
Set in early nineteenth-century Britain, Bloodlust & Bonnets follows Lucy, an unworldly debutante who desires a life of passion and intrigue—qualities which earned her the attention of Lady Violet Travesty, the leader of a local vampire cult.
But before Lucy can embark on her new life of vampiric debauchery, she finds herself unexpectedly thrown together with the flamboyant poet Lord Byron (“from books!”) and a mysterious bounty-hunter named Sham. The unlikely trio lie, flirt, fight, and manipulate each other as they make their way across Britain, disrupting society balls, slaying vampires, and making every effort not to betray their feelings to each other as their personal and romantic lives become increasingly entangled.
Both witty and slapstick, elegant and gory, Emily McGovern’s debut graphic novel pays tribute to and pokes fun at beloved romance tropes, delivering a joyous, action-packed world of friendship and adventure.
This is the first graphic novel that I’ve read and I was very pleasantly surprised by how much I loved it. It’s a very quick, easy read which I ended up finishing in just a couple of hours. It has such a fun and immersive story that I couldn’t help but get into it straight away.
It’s a lot of fun to follow Lucy, Lord Bryon and Sham through the absolute chaos of their journey to finding the vampire clan. There is always something new happening on each page to keep you hooked until the end. Whether that is Lord Byron in a dress, the lot of them bickering or even a complete gory massacre.
Napoleon is one of the little gems of this book that I couldn’t help but adore and laugh at. He adds a new level of humour to the book with his sarcasm and one-worded French phrases. It’s silly and I love it! The other characters are just as good but although Napoleon wasn’t present 100% of the time, I really looked forward to seeing where he would pop up next.
The plot is extremely entertaining, I loved the premise of the characters searching for this secret vampire group, even if they all have different reasons. It was extremely amusing and very dramatic, I definitely found myself laughing out loud at certain parts. For someone who doesn’t read a lot about vampires, I thoroughly enjoyed this. I will surely be reading it again soon.
Overall, Bloodlusts and Bonnets is a fantastic and fun read with an action-packed plot and very funny, dramatic characters! The humour is witty and just laugh out loud funny, to the point where you won’t want to put it down until you’re finished. I highly recommend this if you are looking at getting into graphic novels or just want a quick easy read!
