Synopsis

If the murderer you’re tracking is a vampire, then you want a vampire detective. Just maybe not this one.

It’s not that Jack Valentine is bad at her job. The youngest member of Oxford’s Seekers has an impressive track record, but she also has an impressive grudge against the local baron, Killian Drake.

When a human turns up dead on May Morning, she’s determined to pin the murder on Drake. The problem is that none of the evidence points to him. Instead, it leads Jack into a web of conspiracy involving the most powerful people in the country, people to whom Jack has no access. But she knows someone who does.

To get to the truth, Jack will have to partner up with her worst enemy. As long as she can keep her cool, Drake will point her to the ringleaders, she’ll find the murderer and no one else will have to die.
Body bags on standby.

May Day is the first book in Josie Jaffrey’s Seekers series, an urban fantasy series set in Oxford, England.

My Review

What I Loved

May Day is my third Josie Jaffrey book and I didn’t think it was possible to love her books anymore than I already do. Her books have turned me into such a vampire lover and this one is no exception. The characters are so unique and realistic as well as the blood-sucking world that is extremely fun to read about!

The Story

When a human is found dead early in the morning, Jack Valentine the wonderful, sassy Silver she is, is quick to assume that it’s the irritating yet handsome Baron, Killian Drake that is involved. That is until none of the evidence is pointing in his direction. Jack and the other Seekers must find out who this vampire killing humans is before anymore turn up dead. But as stubborn as she is, Jack does not want to ask for the Baron’s help. As we all know though, things don’t always work out the way we want.

As soon as I started this book, I was instantly hooked and knew I would love it. The plot was extremely entertaining and I was super invested in the investigation. I couldn’t help but try to figure it out as the story went along, but my detective skills are not up to par with Valentine’s. I always do love a good bit of steamy romance as well and all I can say is this book has it!

The Characters

You can’t go wrong with a fiery female lead and I have to say Jack Valentine quickly became one of my favourite characters. She is so determined, brave and has this incredible dark and sarcastic sense of humour that I simply love.

Another thing I love about Jaffrey’s books, is how the world’s overlap as well as the characters. There is never a dull character it’s also exciting when you see a character pop up who you may have met before!

Overall Thoughts

Overall, May Day is an exciting murder mystery full of paranormal twists and romance to die for. Its very easy to get hooked, so make sure your day is free to sit down and read this in one go! I can’t wait to read the next book in the Seeker series as well as more of her other books.

About the Author

Josie is the author of multiple novels and short stories. Most of those are set in the Silverse, a pre- and post-apocalyptic world filled with vampires and zombies.

She is currently working on a range of fantasy and historical fiction projects (both adult and YA). Ultimately, she hopes to be a hybrid author, both traditionally- and self-published.

After finishing her degree in Literae Humaniores (Classics) at the University of Oxford, Josie wasn’t sure what to do with her life.

She slogged through a brief stint working for an investment bank in London during the 2008 credit crunch, then converted to law and qualified as a solicitor specialising in intellectual property.

She worked at a law firm for five years before moving to a UK-based international publisher in 2016. Whilst she loved law, in the end she didn’t love it quite as much as writing, which she now does almost full time.

Josie lives in Oxford with her husband and two cats (Sparky and Gussie), who graciously permit human cohabitation in return for regular feeding and cuddles. The resulting cat fluff makes it difficult for Josie to wear black, which is largely why she gave up being a goth. Although the cats are definitely worth it, she still misses her old wardrobe.
